A trip to the winding sunflower fields of Wynn Farms in Greater Napanee is quickly becoming a summer tradition for visitors far and wide.

Expanding on the success of their pick-your-own flower field, the family owned and operated farm introduced a new series of events this summer known as the Sunflower Festival. The event kicked off last weekend and continues this coming weekend before wrapping up Aug. 10-11. Taking place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the festival includes pick-your-own sunflowers, a chance to wander the sunflower field, a bouncy castle, sand pit and face paining for kids, complete with ice cream or cotton candy.

Strolling through the golden fields provides the perfect opportunity for photos, with several props found along the way.

“We added it one day last year and a number people enjoyed it so we thought we better add it again. We added in extra dates just to make sure we’re accommodating everybody,” said Sarah Wynn, who operates the farm with her husband Jim.

They extend the sunflower blooming season by planting new flowers every two weeks.

This summer’s weather, which has included more than a few days of precipitation, has been a welcome sight for all area farmers and the flower field is no different.

“Every year in the summer farmers all stress big time about the lack of rain,” said Wynn. “This is the one year we’re very thankful for the rain. We opened this field two weeks earlier than we normally would have because the heat woke everything up so fast, but it worked out well for us.”

This marks the third season of the flower farm, which is located at 9592 Loyalist Parkway, just up the road from their well-known apple orchard at 8191 Loyalist Parkway.

Along with the weekend events, the flower field is open seven days a week for pick-your-own bouquets, Monday to Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Apple season isn’t too far away either, with the opening day of the orchard set for Aug. 17. It’s looking to be a strong apple crop this year, despite a late frost occurrence in the spring.

“Even if there are sections of the farm that have less of a crop, the rain has been pumping up what is there. Mother Nature was hard, but kind,” said Wynn.

The ever-popular corn maze is back again with a new theme this year which is set to be revealed Aug. 1.
