Hastings-Lennox and Addington MP Mike Bossio will be hosting a seniors’ projects application workshop June 6 at the L&A County Museum and Archives.

The workshop will assist seniors in applying for funding for community-based projects.

The program’s community-based stream supports activities that engage seniors and address one or more of its five objectives: volunteering, mentoring, expanding awareness of elder abuse, social participation and capital assistance.

Organizations are invited to apply for funding under the NHSP’s three national priorities: preventing elder abuse and fraud, including measures to reduce crimes and harms against seniors; supporting healthy aging in community and addressing dementia, including community supports and intergenerational housing; and counteracting ageism in the workplace to promote labour market retention of seniors.

In speaking of the importance of this new program, Bossio said: “This program has a big impact in rural ridings like ours, whether it’s for churches, community centres, curling clubs, and so much more. I encourage organizations to submit projects led or inspired by seniors for the New Horizons for Seniors Program funding,” said Bossio. “We’ve seen from previous years how beneficial these projects are for empowering seniors, enabling them to pursue an active lifestyle, and expanding their social network, all of which contributes to the sustainability of our rural communities.”

The 2019–20 NHSP community-based call for proposals is open until June 21. For details on how to apply online, visit www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/new-horizons-seniors.html.

As well, Bossio has set up workshops in Madoc and Napanee for those constituents wishing for help in the application process.

Locally, the workshop is being held on June 6 from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at the Lennox and Addington County Museum and Archives.

Those interested in coming to the workshop are asked to contact Bossio’s constituency office toll free 1-866-471-3800 or RSVP online at his event postings at www.mikebossiomp.ca.
