Wheeler, Team Canada to play for gold this afternoon at IIHF Worlds

A 4-1 win over Finland on New Year’s Day has advanced Team Canada to the finals of the IIHF Women’s World Championship, which will take place 2:30 p.m. eastern time this afternoon in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The finals will be a rematch of last year as the Canadians will take on the U.S. Erinsville’s Maddi Wheeler will be among the Canadians looking to repeat as champions. She has a goal and two assists through four games played at the tournament. Canada is undefeated thus far, including a 2-1 victory over the U.S. in their Dec. 29 meeting.

In last year’s final, Wheeler scored the game winner in overtime to secure the gold medal.
