Erinsville’s Maddi Wheeler recorded two assists in two games played at the IIHF World Championships in Obihiro, Japan thus far, helping Canada’s National Women’s U-18 hockey team to a 1-1 record.

Wheeler assisted on Canada’s first goal of the tournament on Saturday, setting up Daniella Calabrese at the 8:24 mark of the first against Sweden. That proved to be a critical goal as the Canadians held on for a 2-1 victory.

This morning, in a game played at 3 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, the Canadians fell 3-2 to the United States.

Wheeler again helped Canada get on the board in that one, digging the puck out of the corner and making a cross-ice pass to Julia Gosling, who rifled it into the top corner.

Canada went up 2-0 early in the second but couldn’t hold the lead as the Americans stormed back with three unanswered goals.

Canada will wrap up the preliminary round tomorrow evening when they take on Russia in a game that will begin at 11 p.m. EST.
