No matter what else you have planned over the next few months, I hope picking up a great book or two is on your list. Library staff are always happy to lend a hand with suggestions and even share a few titles on their TBR (“to be read”) as inspiration. Below, a few library staff share what they are most looking forward to reading this fall (aka the biggest time of year in publishing). Karen, Coordinator, Bath Branch
- Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune (available now) is a sweet contemporary fantasy novel with a hint of LGTBQIA romance. It follows a successful yet socially disconnected man who dies, but gets a chance to live a lifetime in seven days before officially crossing over.
- Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty (available now) is about a family of tennis stars who debate whether or not to report their mother as missing because it would implicate their father.
- Game On by Janet Evanovich (available Nov. 2) is the latest in the always popular and long-running Stephanie Plum series. Unsure if he is her partner or her competition, Stephanie Plum and Oswald Wednesday try to hunt down a master cyber criminal in Trenton.
Marg, Supervisor, Napanee Branch
- Three Sisters by Heather Morris (available Oct. 5) is the third in a trilogy of heart-wrenching historical dramas beginning with The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Also based on a true story, this new entry follows three sisters harrowing escape from Auschwitz and subsequent journey to Israel.
- Wish You Were Here by Jodi Picoult (available November 30th) follows a woman who has everything on track and is expecting a proposal from her doctor boyfriend on their upcoming trip to the Galapagos. But then a virus emerges and he can no longer go on vacation, so she decides to complete the trip by herself.
- The Perfect Family by Robyn Harding (available now) follows a picture-perfect family–all hiding dark secrets–whose lives are upended by a dangerously escalating series of pranks.
Kelly, Coordinator, Yarker Branch
- Fight Night by Miriam Toews (available now) recounts a few weeks in the life of three generations of strong, complicated women living in Toronto.
- Em by Kim Thuy (available now) is a character-driven novel that follows a multitude of connected characters and offers a snapshot of Vietnam and the Vietnamese diaspora in North America from French colonization to life after the war.
- Beautiful World, Where Are You? by Sally Rooney (available now) follows four young people who pair up, break up, have wild flirtations and worry about their friendships and the world they live in while pondering their eroding youth.
Michele, Library Relief
- Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead (available now) follows a furniture salesman in 1960s Harlem who becomes a fence for shady cops, local gangsters and low-life pornographers after his cousin involves him in a failed heist.
- In the Weeds by Tom Vitale (available Oct. 5) is a memoir by Anthony Bourdain’s long time director and producer. It takes readers behind the scenes to reveal the insanity of filming television in some of the most volatile places in the world.
- Algonquin Spring by Rick Revelle (available now) is part of Algonquin Quest, a juvenile series that is set in 14th century Ontario and written by a local author. In this entry, Mahingan has learned that his wife, Wabananang, was been taken captive. He and his family are wintering north of the Ottawa River and they must first survive until spring in order to save her.

- The Apollo Murders by Chris Hadfield (Oct. 12) is the eagerly awaited first novel by Canada’s favourite astronaut. This alternate history thriller is set in 1973 as Houston flight controller Kaz Zemeckis is struggling to keep his NASA crew focused as it competes with a Soviet team to get to the Moon…but there is murder afoot.
- A Time Outside This Time by Amitava Kumar (available Oct. 5) is described as a one-of-a-kind novel about fake news, memory, and the ways in which truth can be not only stranger than fiction, but a fiction of its own.
- True Raiders by Brad Ricca (available now) is a legendary story (and inspiration for the film Raiders of the Lost Ark) that follows a British rogue nobleman, who, after being dared to do so, headed a secret 1909 expedition to find the fabled Ark of the Covenant.
