Carter Free was recognized by his hometown Greater Napanee council on Tuesday, as mayor Marg Isbester made a formal presentation to the U20 Pan Am silver medalist.
A special deputation was made to honour the 19-year-old, who posted a time of 3.48 in the 1,500 metres at the U20 Pan Am games in Costa Rica in July.
“We wanted to thank you for the representation, not only for NDSS, not only for Greater Napanee, not only for yourself at the U20 Pan Am games, but for your country,” said Isbester. “Your hard work and dedication has paid off, reaching such heights at such a young age. We wish you all the best at St. Claire College. You have been an inspiration for many of us.”
Isbester noted Free was also extremely humble after he expressed his disappointment at not being able to run in this year’s Heritage Run, as he had another race commitment that weekend. In 2018 he set the Napanee course record.
A large portion of friends and family packed the council chambers to witness Free receive the certificate presented by the town.
