Deseronto’s late comeback attempt was all for naught as the Bulldogs fell 6-4 at home to the Tweed Oil Kings on Saturday.

Luigi Martone scored for the Bulldogs with 3:20 left in the game, knotting the game at 4-4.

Just when the game appeared headed to overtime Tweed’s Sheldon Thompson scored with just 44 seconds left on the clock. Desperate to once again find the equalizer the Bulldogs opted for an extra attacker, but it wasn’t to be as Tweed’s Jason Shaw scored on the empty net with just three seconds remaining.

Brandon Torres, Brodie Butt and Greg Arnburg also scored for the Bulldogs, who rallied from a 3-1 deficit to work their way back to even before the last-minute heart break.

The loss snapped Deseronto’s two game win streak and drops them to 8-10 on the season. They remain in fifth place in the Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League’s West Division, six points back of first place Gananoque. Tweed moves into a second place tie with Arnprior, both sporting 21 points. Smiths Falls is fourth with 21 while the Frontenac Phantoms remain last with five.

Deseronto will have a bit of a break this week before they host the first place Gananoque Islanders Feb. 4 at the Deseronto Community Rec Centre. Puck drop is 6:30 p.m.
