Trinity United Church will present its second installment of an ongoing Healthy Living Series on Oct. 10 with a talk titled Where There’s A Will, There’s A Way.

Featuring local attorney Bruce Cowle of Madden, Sirman and Cowle, the talk will focus on the importance of having a legal document that outlines all final wishes following death. He’ll answer some frequently asked questions on the topic. Take home reading materials and brochures will also be available.

“The hope is to target not just seniors, this is of broad importance to everyone,” said Sue Walden, one of the event organizers for Trinity United Church. “Planning your affairs for the future. The importance of thinking about what you want and having a will.”

The talk will cover both power of attorney for finances and personal care.

“Families need to start talking about it so they know what their loved ones wishes are,” added Walden.

An uncomfortable topic for some, the fact is people at all ages need to consider having their affairs in order just in case the unlikely happens. In cases where there isn’t a final will and testament, the government is often called in to divide up assets.

“So often people don’t think they need something like this,” said Helen Richards, who is also helping to organize the event. “It’s way in the future. But especially if you have children, if something were to happen, (having a will means) your loved ones are looked after.”

The free event will run from 2-4 p.m. inside the church at 25 Bridge St. and includes refreshments. To reserve a seat call 613-354-3858, though anyone can show up on Oct. 10 and still attend. It’s open to all members of the public, they don’t have to be a member of the church.

Launched last year, the Healthy Living Series is an annual event that features presentations which are designed to be of interest to a large portion of the community. It’s meant to bring people together while also showcasing Trinity United’s ability to host a variety of events. In the winter they will host a jazz band as part of their ongoing live music series.
