Transport goes wrong way on 401

What could have been a highway disaster on Saturday night luckily ended with no injuries — although a Brampton man is facing Highway Traffic Act charges.

At around 10:47 p.m., officers with the Napanee OPP responded to reports of a transport truck driving eastbound in the westbound lanes on Highway 401 east of Napanee.

The officers located and stopped the transport truck without incident. The driver, a 52-year-old man from Brampton, was charged with careless driving and driving the wrong way In one-way traffic.

Drug charges

A Toronto-area man is facing narcotics charges after a traffic stop west of Napanee on Sunday night.

At around 6:50 p.m., officers with the Napanee OPP assisted officers with Tyendinaga Police Service with a traffic stop on Hwy. 401 westbound at the Shannonville on-ramp.  

According to the OPP, officers had stopped a silver Honda Odyssey and, while speaking to the male driver, detected the odour of marijuana inside the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of what appeared to be marijuana.

The driver, a 40-year-old man from Markham, was arrested and has been charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear at provincial court in Napanee on Aug. 28 to answer to the charges.

Addington Highlands assault

A Kaladar man was taken into police custody following an incident late Sunday afternoon.

The OPP say that at 5:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to a disturbance at a residence on Highway 7 in Addington Highlands.

According to the OPP, investigation revealed an altercation occurred between a 21-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman. The man reportedly uttered threats of death towards the female and her pet, and also damaged property in the home. No physical injuries were sustained.

The man has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault, mischief to property under $5000 and two counts of uttering threats.

The name of the accused was not released to protect the identity of the victim.

Early-morning altercation

A local man is facing charges after an early-morning incident in Amherstview on Saturday.

At 7:15 a.m., Napanee OPP arrested a man after responding to a report of a  disturbance at an apartment on Penny Lane in Amherstview. According to police, the man began damaging property at the apartment and, when confronted by the homeowner, the male began to assault the homeowner

A 37-year-old Amherstview man has been charged with assault and two counts of mischief.
