Tractor trailer strikes OPP cruiser on Hwy 401

A Napanee OPP officer was fortunate to escape major injury on Saturday as a vehicle fell from a tractor trailer onto his cruiser, which he was inside at the time.

The officer was responding to an accident on Hwy 401 around 9 a.m. A single vehicle had struck the concrete median westbound near mile marker 537.

The Napanee OPP officer arrived on the scene of the collision and parked a cruiser with emergency lights activated. A tractor trailer travelling westbound on the 401 lost control and jack knifed, striking the police cruiser. The tractor trailer in question was loaded with multiple cars, which became unsecure upon impact. One of the unsecure vehicles became dislodged and landed on the OPP cruiser. The officer was inside the police cruiser at the time of impact and escaped without injury.

The officer was assessed by paramedics at the scene and later attended the hospital where he was treated and released.

The driver of the truck has been charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.
