Stolen truck recovered following short pursuit on River Road

Beaver Staff

A stolen vehicle attempt didn’t get very far on Monday evening, ending after a short pursuit through some backyards near River Road.

Napanee OPP had responded to a report of a stolen pick up truck, which had been stolen from a gas station on Centre Street.

Several moments later Napanee OPP received a traffic complaint about a black Dodge pick-up driving in an erratic manner, almost hitting another vehicle. The vehicle was reported to be travelling at a high rate of speed and pulled a U-turn into a field near County Road 9. The vehicle continued to travel towards the back of the property.

Police attended and located the vehicle abandoned at the back of the property. The vehicle had driven across a lawn, through a chained gate, breaking wooden fence posts and eventually coming to rest as a result of being caught up in the fence and was unable to be driven any further.

The area was quickly scanned and containment was set up surrounding the property.

Members from the OPP Emergency Response Team and OPP Canine Unit were called to attend to conduct a search of the area.

An officer that was containing the area of County Road 9 on the east side observed a male walking out of the ditch area, headed towards an address on River Road. The male approached the front door of the residence and was banging on the front door.

Officers approached the male, who turned and walked aggressively towards the officers with his arms raised and fists clenched.

The male complied with police demands and was arrested without any further incident.

A 38 year old man from Napanee has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained through crime over $5,000, two counts of mischief and two counts of failure to comply with probation order.
