A Southview Public School student-led fundraiser generated $400 to go towards the Morningstar Mission’s warming centre.

The money was raised through a school dance, which was organized by Grade 8 students Zoey Lowe-Lynk, Sierra McColman and Julianna Houard.

“We started thinking about a winter dance, it was in October that we were planning it,” said McColman. “We started thinking about a winter dance, not exactly Christmas because not everyone celebrates that holiday. Then we started thinking about what could be in the dance to raise money.”

Lowe-Lynk drew inspiration from her former school, which hosted a Boo-Bash fundraising dance at Halloween. From there the idea grew into a Winter Wonderland theme. Prizes were raffled off during the dance and baked goods were sold to raise the money.

Students from Grade 7 and 8 helped to decorate and the dance was open to students from Grades 6-8.

“I didn’t think we would make $400, I thought we would make like $200 or something, so yeah, I think it was pretty successful,” said Lowe-Lynk. “I just hope people had fun.”

“It felt nice to raise so much money to donate,” added Houard.

On Wednesday the students presented the cash, as well as schoolbags filled with essentials, to Morningstar Mission executive director Kevin Alkenbrack
