Beaver Sports

Softball Canada has selected Napanee to be the site of one of their six combines that will be held throughout the country this summer as they scout players to join the U23 men’s national team.

The one-day showcase will be held July 25 in Napanee and is open to athletes born between 1998-2001. Athletes born in 2002 and 2003 may be able to participate but will need approval from Softball Canada before registering by contacting Mike Branchaud (mbranchaud@softball.ca).

The U23 Men’s National Team coaching staff will operate the combines with the help of local National Team players and/or guest coaches. Each player will be evaluated on speed, throwing, hitting, defensive play and general softball game play.

The registration fee is $100 per player to attend a combine. A Rawlings National Team camp shirt will be provided. A minimum of 10 athletes is needed to operate each Combine. The registration deadline will be 10 days prior to the start of each combine. If there are not enough registrants, a full refund will be issued, or players are welcome to transfer to another location.

A final selection camp of up to 22 players will be held October 1-3 in Saskatoon, Sask. Athletes invited to the final selection camp will be required to pay a $300 participation fee. Softball Canada will cover the cost of flights, meals and accommodations during the camp.

The final Team Canada roster of 16 athletes will be attending the 2021 WBSC Americas Continental Qualifier from Dec. 10-19 in Colombia providing COVID-19 health concerns subside and travel restrictions are lifted.

Along with Napanee, combines are scheduled to take place July 3 in St. John’s. N.L., Saskatoon, Sask., on July 10/11, Brookfield, N.S. on July 24, Innerkip, On., on July 25 and Kelowna, B.C. on Aug. 21.
