Seniors weigh in on pool project

Seniors who attended an open house on Greater Napanee’s proposed aquatics facility on Sept. 11 were, for the most part, in favour of the project.

That was the finding presented to town council during a regular meeting Tuesday night. Referencing a survey filled out by 96 seniors who attended the open house, Vicki Hallam of the town’s Pool Force Task Committee said the data showed a keen interest among residents 65 and older.

“We were very pleased with the public turnout,” Hallam told council. “Out of the 96 respondents, the top three activities that the seniors would regularly participate in would be aquafit, recreational swimming and lane swimming. And 59 of those 96 said they would use the facility more than once a week and 24 saying once a week.”

The majority of those surveyed favoured a pay-per-visit type format for payment, with 43 voting that way. That was the popular choice over monthly membership (25) and annual membership (20). Of those not in favour of the pool or with reservations, cost was their biggest concern.

The open house was part of the second phase of background work conducted by LeisurePlan International, a consulting firm hired by the town. The information collected from the open house will be forwarded to the firm as they put together their final report.

“It continues to give a lot of support for the pool,” Hallam said of the results from the open house.
