Lennox Community Theatre will tee-off its 2023-24 playbill with a production of The Ladies Foursome, debuting Sept. 15.
Directed by Chris Newton, this four-person cast play was written by Norm Foster, a sort of companion piece to The Foursome.
This time around it tells the comedic story of four female golfers, a contrast to his previous work, which features male golfers.
“The big theme is it’s about friendship and connections and how people create their own identities with the friends and connections that they have,” explains Newton. “Of course not just create them, but discover new things about them. Your friends tell you a lot and often don’t let you get away with stuff. That’s a fun sort of element of this comedy.”
Though it is a light-hearted comedy, the play starts off on a somber note.
“Four women have been going to do a golf game for 14 years,” Newton says of the plot. “One of the foursome dies in a freak accident, being hit by lightning as she’s riding a Ferris wheel. The day after the funeral the three remaining golfers want to do a memorial game of golf, but they need another person.”
To round out their foursome they invite a friend of their late friend to join their group. Though this fellow golfer was a friend of their late friend Cathy, none of the other three ladies-Margot, Tate or Connie, has ever met her.
“There’s 18 scenes with 18 holes of golf and each one reveals a little bit more and you get this interesting contrast that this golfer that these three people thought they knew, is a little different when you hear about some of the things that she was involved with when this new person joins in,” said Newton. “It’s nice and sweet and has some really funny one-liners where people have some very human foibles.”
