A new golf tournament will tee off in Bath on Sept. 19, raising funds for both the village’s Canada Day Committee and Reconciliation Canada.

Known as the 1st Annual RBC Community Golf Tournament, the event will be held at Bath’s Loyalist Golf and County Club.

Richard Wall, a financial planner at RBC, launched the tournament. The funds raised from the event will support next year’s Canada Day celebrations while also supporting the Indigenous community. Recent discoveries of burial grounds at the site of former residential schools prompted Wall to want to make a positive change.

“(Supporting Bath’s Canada Day events) was the intention for last year but going into this year following all the horrible tragic news about findings of Indigenous graves, I was like I don’t feel comfortable supporting Canada Day fully so I’d like to split the proceeds 50/50 between Bath Canada Day as I promised but also 50 per cent to Reconciliation Canada, which works to educate Canadians on Indigenous culture and help them integrate into the community,” said Wall.

Reconciliation Canada describes itself as ‘an Indigenous-led charity that catalyzes meaningful relationships through value based dialogue, leadership and action.’

The cost for the golf tournament is $125 per person, which includes 18 holes with a cart, food, access to the driving range and a chance at some prizes. There will be activities on the course as well including four hole-in-one contests as well as a silent auction. Those that pay the entry fee are eligible for a $25 tax receipt.

The deadline to register is Sept. 3 and can do so by calling 613-888-7722 or emailing Richard.wall@rbc.com. The maximum number of participants is capped at 144 people.

There are also sponsorship opportunities still available for local businesses. Wall says along with raising money, he hopes the tournament will serve as a great networking opportunity for local businesses as well.
