Raiders’ season officially ends

The Napanee Raiders’ quest to repeat as Schmalz Cup champions came to an abrupt halt Friday afternoon as Hockey Canada announced it would be cancelling its insurance for the year.

The Provincial Junior Hockey League quickly announced it would be cancelling all games for the rest of the 2020 playoffs and would resume again with the start of the regular season, tentatively scheduled for September.

The news isn’t completely shocking as Hockey Canada had announced late yesterday it would be suspending all operations amid COVID-19 protocols. A cancellation of the remainder of the season was always an anticipated possible outcome.

Napanee was looking like a legitimate threat to repeat as provincial champions, having started the playoffs 6-0, and closing in on a second straight division title.
