Police seize hand gun and drugs following traffic stop in Deseronto

Police say they found a replica hand gun and various drugs after a L&A OPP pulled over a driver known to be disqualified from driving in Deseronto.

A 36 year-old person is in custody awaiting a bail hearing for a host of charges after being stopped by police on Wednesday in Deseronto.

Just before 3:00 p.m., an Ontario Provincial Police officer from the L&A County detachment was patrolling in Deseronto when they observed a vehicle being driven on Dundas Street. The officer recognized the driver of that vehicle to be someone who was prohibited from driving a motor vehicle.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver, a 36-year-old of no fixed address, was placed under arrest for driving while prohibited.

During the course of the investigation the officer observed that the accused was in possession of a number of items, including a replica handgun, which they were prohibited from possessing. A quantity of cannabis and other drugs were also seized from the accused.

They have been charged with driving while prohibited, 11 counts of failing to comply with bail conditions, breaching a probation order, two counts of possession of Schedule 1 substances (suspected cocaine and methamphetamine), possession of cannabis for the purposes of selling, using a plate not authorized for a vehicle and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.

-On May 28 at approximately 1 a.m., officers of the L&A County OPP were on general patrol and observed a vehicle traveling on Bridge Street at Centre Street without any lights on. Police initiated a traffic stop and found the diver to be showing signs of impairment.  The driver was arrested and an OPP Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) officer was called to assist in the investigation.

As a result of the investigation, L&A County OPP have charged a 36-year-old man of Kingston with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs.

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee on July 28. The accused person’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
