Police say false alarm in case of search and rescue on Lake Ontario near Bath

Beaver Staff

Emergency crews believe a case of mistaken identity led to a search and rescue on Lake Ontario off the coast of Bath yesterday evening around 8 p.m.

Upon closer investigation all that was recovered from the water was a log, which crews believes a concerned citizen had mistaken for a body. The extensive search, coupled with the fact no missing persons have been reported lead rescue workers to believe no one was in distress.

Officers from the Lennox and Addington OPP detachment as well as members of Greater Napanee Emergency Services fire crews were joined by the Joint Rescue Co-Ordination Centre (JRCC) from Trenton as well as a search and rescue helicopter. OPP officers, firefighters and other emergency services personnel searched along the shoreline near Millhaven Institution but didn’t find any signs of a body.

-Officers with the L&A OPP responded to a report of a vehicle in the ditch on Monday night just after 8 p.m. in Tyendinaga Township.

An OPP Drug Recognition Expert officer based out of Napanee was called to assist with the investigation. As a result of the investigation, a 26-year-old Tweed man faces charges of operation while impaired by drugs, possession of property obtained by crime-theft of motor vehicle and failure to comply with probation orders. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash and no injuries reported.
