Police provide update to Tuesday’s fatal collision

Shortly before 4 p.m. on Feb. 9, emergency services responded to the 1800 block of Lennox and Addington County Rd 9 following a report that a vehicle had collided with a house.

The investigation into the exact cause of the collision is still underway. What is known thus far is that a tow truck, towing another vehicle, was eastbound on County Rd 9 when it left the roadway and crashed into a house. The driver of that vehicle, 59-year-old Derry Rankin of Greater Napanee, was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination has now been completed which indicates that the driver encountered medical distress while driving. Investigators believe that this medical situation was a contributing factor in the cause of the collision.

A passenger in the tow truck and the occupants of the house were not seriously injured in the collision.

County Road 9 was closed to traffic while collision investigators examined the scene and while recovery efforts to remove the vehicle from the house were ongoing. The road has since been reopened.
