Picture books that celebrate books

Patricia from the Napanee Branch Library has been running successful, highly engaging storytimes for several years now. Naturally, she has developed eye for books that are well suited for read-aloud scenarios and will be fun and absorbing even for very early readers. Here she discusses some of her “picks” for picture books that celebrate books and reading:

“I love picture books! There is nothing more exciting to me when reading at storytime than finding a book that engages not only the children but the caregivers as well. Below are three of my favourite books about books and reading.

-New to our collection is The Book Hog by Greg Pizzoli. The Book Hog loved books – the smell, the feel and the pictures…but he had a secret: the Book Hog could not read. One day he finds the library and storytime! His new discovery helps him learn to read and not only love the smell, feel and the pictures but the stories inside the books as well.

This Book Just Ate My Dog by Richard Byrne is one of my class visit read-aloud favourites because of its humour and reader participation. Bella is taking her dog for a stroll across the page when the book suddenly eats him!

You Can Read by Helaine Becker is a humorous rhyming treat that encourages readers to read everywhere and manages to rhyme France and Underpants.

Wanting to hear some new stories with your little ones? Why not join us on Wednesdays at our Amherstview or Napanee Branches at 10:30 a.m. for a storytime filled with great books, songs and finger plays and followed by a simple craft.”

All of these book listed above are beautifully illustrated, perfect for reading aloud and can be enjoyed by toddlers and adults alike. They can be reserved from your branch of the library.

Parents and/or guardians of early readers should also note that Success by 6 week is fast approaching. United Way KFL&A’s Success by 6 Week (May 6-12) provides a variety of free activities that encourage simple family fun. From movies, swims, celebrity storytime to moms and tots yoga and more, there will be plenty of enriching activities running across our region. The County of Lennox and Addington Libraries will be running special storytimes on May 8 at 10:30 a.m. in Napanee and Amherstview. Napanee’s storytime will is a Princes and Princesses theme and Amherstview will be a Teddy Bear Picnic. Participants are encouraged to dress up and bring their stuffies.
