A pair of goals allowed by Napanee’s special teams unit-one with a man-advantage, the other down a player-was the difference as the Raiders fell 4-3 to the visiting Picton Pirates on Friday night.
Gerritt Kempers scored short-handed 1:19 into the third for Picton to knot the game at 1-1. Zack Brooks buried the eventual game winner for the Pirates at the 6:44 mark while his team was on the power-play.
Napanee entered the third period clinging to a one-goal lead courtesy tallies from Aiden Haller-Brady in the first with Luke Jarmin and Alex Case each finding the back of the net in the second period. Case’s goal was also of the short-handed variety.
Aiden Treverton and Luc Amat both potted goals in the first period for Picton.
Denholm Blair, who was making his Raider regular season debut between the pipes, took the loss with 27 saves on the night. He was out duelled by Nolan Lane, who turned away 33 pucks to earn the win.
The loss drops Napanee to an even 1-1 on the young season while the Pirates remain unbeaten at 2-0.
Napanee will look to shake off this loss and get back into the win column tomorrow night when they travel to Frankford for their first look at the Huskies this season. Puck drop for that game is 7 p.m. Frankford comes into the game with a perfect 2-0 record.
The Raiders will next be back home at the Best and Bash Arena on Sept. 27 when they welcome the North Kawartha Knights.
