The Napanee Beaver’s own resident cartoonist once again earned national recognition, placing third in the Canadian Community Newspaper Award’s Best Local Cartoon, Circulation 10,000 and Over.

Nimigan’s winning entry, from his popular Our Town series, features a couple sitting on a couch, starring at two different screens. While one looks at a split screen television featuring an MLB, CFL, NFL and NHL game, his partner watches a soap opera on a computer with headphones. The caption reads: ‘Quality time in October.’

This marked the fifth straight year Nimigan has placed in the top three, leading him to quip “maybe they only had three submissions.” In reality, the competition draws submissions from community newspapers across Canada.

Nimigan says he’s currently working on a follow up to his Our Town book, which featured a collection of his first 10 years of the series. His next book, which will coincide with an exhibit at the L&A County Museum and Archives, will include the last six years. Its due for release in spring 2020.
