OPP seek public’s help in finding fugitive

The OPP are asking for the public’s help in trying to locate a man who allegedly fled police during an incident on Tuesday.

The man is considered by police to be dangerous, and police advise the public not to approach him but call 911.

At 11:20 a.m. an officer with the Napanee OPP stopped to offer assistance to two motorists on Beechwood Road in Greater Napanee. The officer recognized one of the men as a John MacDonald. who is currently wanted by Frontenac OPP for Assault with a Weapon.

When approached, the accused and the second male ran back to their vehicles and fled. MacDonald was driving a red Ford F150. The second vehicle was a white GMC Sierra which had no plates and was later determined to be stolen. Police attempted to stop the white truck, but the male driver refused to stop; the OPP say he was driving head-on into oncoming traffic and attempted to cause a collision with the police vehicle. The police stopped following the vehicle for public safety. 

The vehicle was located shortly after by officers with the Tyendinaga Police Service and the male was found after he fled on foot. The male was apprehended by the OPP Emergency Response Unit and transported to hospital; he was released and transported to the Napanee Detachment of the OPP.

The second male who is now is custody is Sean Harvey, a 37-year-old male from Bath. Harvey has been charged with flight while being pursued by a peace officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of stolen property, driving under suspension.

The accused was held and will attend a bail hearing today in provincial court.

The Ford F150 driven by MacDonald was located by an officer with the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau a short time later; it had been abandoned. Members with the OPP Tactical Response Unit, Emergency Response Unit and Canine Unit conducted a major search of the area with negative results.

MacDonald is additionally charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, driving while disqualified, and mischief over $5,000

At this time the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may follow.

NOTE — At 1:20 p.m.,  the Napanee OPP issued the following correction to its original press release relating to this matter:  The Napanee detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) incorrectly identified a male, John MACDONALD as being wanted by Frontenac OPP for Sexual Assault on a Person Under the age of 16 and Failing to Comply with Probation. MacDonald is not wanted for this matter as it is currently before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kingston, ON. The OPP apologize for this error.
