OPP say Thousand Islands Bridge closes due to protestors

Beaver Staff

OPP are urging motorists travelling to the U.S. to avoid the Thousand Islands Bridge as protestors have blocked the road leading to bridge that spans Hill Island, On. to Wellesley Island, NY.

Police say access from Hwy 401 eastbound and west bound near the bridge is closed and police remain on scene. The police did not identify the group responsible for the block or if it related to the ongoing railroad blockade that has been going on for over a week in Tyendinaga.

In response to the railroad blockade, prime minister Justin Trudeau cancelled a planned business trip to Barbados to instead meet with cabinet ministers in Ottawa to discuss how to resolve the blockade. The meeting was held this morning.
