On Feb. 24 two-time Olympian Britt Benn will leap into the frigid waters of Belleville’s Bay of Quinte so that other athletes may have the chance to live their dreams.

Benn, who grew up in Napanee, will be among the daring souls taking part in 2023 Belleville Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics Ontario.

“I’m very familiar with the dedication and commitment it takes to pursue your dreams,” said Benn, who joined Belleville Fire and Emergency Services following her Olympic career, representing Canada’s rugby sevens teams in Rio and Tokyo, earning bronze in 2016. “I’ve also been in a position where I’ve relied on my community for financial support to chase my Olympic dream.  So without hesitation, I knew the Polar Plunge was a great opportunity to raise money for the 26,000 special Olympic athletes across Ontario while representing Belleville Fire.”

Benn has never completed a Polar Plunge, but her second career has afforded her some training that may come in handy the day of the jump.

“Most recently, I’ve completed Ice Water Rescue with Belleville Fire and Emergency Services,” said Benn. “However, I’ll be much lighter for the Polar Plunge and won’t have the benefit of wearing an Ice Command Suit that keeps me dry and buoyant.  It’s safe to say, this plunge will be the coldest I’ve ever been.”

Having represented Canada at the world’s biggest stage has given Benn a unique insight into what these funds could mean for a young athlete.

“Supporting these athletes means another dream is coming true,” said Benn. “How incredible it is, to be part of that athlete’s journey. In the past, I was hopeful people would support my Olympic dream. Fifteen years later, I can finally return the favour. From one Olympian to another.”

The jump will take place between 1 and 2 p.m. at the South Herchimer Boat Launch.
