Napanee’s Gale Rogers isn’t slowing down for his 80th birthday.

This past weekend, Rogers marked the personal milestone by swimming across the Bay of Quinte at the Skyway Bridge, and then running across the Skyway Bridge the next day.

Rogers said the swim wasn’t too taxing, although it was a bit chilly. He said preparation made a difference. “I’ve been practicing. I exercise every day for an hour, and I’ve been swimming in the river for the last six weeks,” he said.

This week, he’s also organizing a fundraising concert to support accessibility renovations at The Spire, a community space in Kingston.

“That’s a big project. We’re raising $750,000 million for accessible facilities, and it’s under construction now,” he said.

This Saturday, Gordon Webster, a New York City jazz pianist and longtime friend of Rogers, will take the stage for a roast beef dinner and concert at The Spire at 82 Sydenham St. in Kingston.

Tickets are $40 each for dinner and concert; concert only is $20.

Tickets are available at Brian’s Record Option or at The Spire office (open from 10 a.m. to noon, Monday to Friday).

Dinner starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 7 p.m.
