Marg suggests Everyone Here is Lying by Shari Lapena

An affair, a missing child and a whole neighborhood of liars…Shari Lapena’s latest offering is a suspenseful thriller set in a quiet, suburban town where it seems everyone has secrets and nefarious reasons for lying to cover them up.

William Wooler is very unhappy that the woman he’s been having an affair with called it off after their latest rendezvous. When he arrives home expecting to be able to lick his wounds in peace and quiet, he is surprised to find his daughter Avery at home. She pushes his buttons one to many times and in a fit of rage he does something he will come to regret.

Later that same day same day Avery is declared missing. Where is Avery and what is has happened to her? Everyone in their close-knit neighbourhood seems to have their own theories of her whereabouts as accusations begin to fly. They also have their own self-serving reasons for embellishing the truth.

This is a fast-paced, entertaining read with numerous unreliable characters and a well-plotted storyline.

Patricia suggests Dirty Thirty by Janet Evanovich

This month Janet Evanovich fans get to revisit their very favorite characters – Stephanie, Lula, Ranger, Morelli, Bob and Grandma Mazur. The series began in 1993 with the publication of One for the Money and now readers can enjoy Dirty Thirty. Yes, 30 books that have made me laugh tears of joy, roll my eyes and have a book crush on Ranger. Stephanie Plum and her band of characters get into the most ridiculous situations that keep fans coming back for more.

In Dirty Thirty Stephanie is hired by local jeweler Martin Rabner to find his missing security guard Nutsy who is suspected to be the robber of his jewelry store. Stephanie finds Nutsy but ends up moving him in to her apartment for his safety. Lula also movies in after her apartment is burned. This is way too many people in her small apartment so Stephanie moves in with Ranger (and Bob). As the story unfolds there are hospital hijinks, veterinary visits, cat capers, stun gun usages and failed attempts to catch bail skips.

Many donuts were consumed, lots of cars were destroyed, Lula outfits were on point and peanut and olive sandwiches still sound gross – but the humor, mystery and romance are all still a treat in Dirty Thirty.

Jennifer suggests Disappeared by Francisco X Stork

In this tense thriller, a family struggles to survive amid realistic criminal enterprise which threatens to swallow their city whole. This riveting story highlights the harsh complexity of young Mexicans’ lives.

Ever since Sara’s best friend, Linda, disappeared, she has used her position as a journalist to investigate the deeply embedded corruption. It is not long before the cartel targets Sara for giving voice to the plight of desperacidas, young women abducted into human trafficking. Meanwhile her brother, Emiliano, who works hard to earn what he can, is being lured into the drug trade by dreams of a better life.

This harrowing novel deftly navigates coming-of-age amid larger societal forces such as poverty and widespread danger. This emotionally intense story impresses with intimate knowledge of the hard life faced by those who illegally cross borders.
