Staff and students safely evacuated following small fire at Newburgh Public School

Stone Mills Fire Department says all staff and students were safely evacuated following a small fire at Newburgh Public School.

“There was a small fire contained to a small kitchen area in the school,” said Stone Mills deputy fire chief James Richmond. “The fire was quickly contained and extinguished by firefighters. There was a large amount of smoke in the school that was ventilated by firefighters. The cause of the fire is still under investigation however it was not caused by any cooking. Staff did an excellent job of evacuating the school. One staff member was taken by paramedics to hospital for assessment of smoke inhalation. There was minor damage to the school.”
