Saturday June 15 will mark the 14th year that Art Among the Ruins will be running in Newburgh, running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The outdoor art show and sale is set among the ruins of a 19th century mill, beside the Napanee River.
Stacey Anderson, one of the organizers of the event, spoke to the Beaver regarding this annual event. The event takes place on her family’s property, wherein the ruins of the historic mill are situated.
According to Anderson, Art Among the Ruins was started as an act of service, “Growing up, there were so many opportunities to bring people together, from winter festivals to pancake breakfasts. Then, that sort of went by the wayside. So it’s nice to bring that back for the residents here and be able to bring the community together.”
“There’s also a large economic benefit and it’s put Newburgh on the map,” added Anderson. “As well, it’s spilled over to the neighbouring regions, such as Napanee and Yarker.”
Each year, there are some new and some old vendors at the event. Some residents even capitalize on the many visitors that come to Newburgh for Art Among the Ruins by creating their own events.
A notable off-shoot event this year is a locally sourced lunch provided by Eric DePoe, formerly of the Yarker Tea Room, which runs from 12a.m.-3p.m. at the Newburgh Hall, also on June 15.
With 2,700 visitors to the area for last year’s event, Anderson is predicting there will be at least as many who partake this year.
