A new term of Greater Napanee council was officially sworn in Tuesday afternoon, with Marg Isbester stepping into the role as mayor.
Justice Geoff Griffin was on hand to administer the oath of office to Isbester as well as incoming deputy mayor Max Kaiser along with councillors John McCormack, Terry Richardson, Dave Pinnell Jr., Bob Norrie and Ellen Johnson.
After they took the oath and signed their legal documents —Isbester making note of doing so with a pink pen — the councillors took their seats around the horseshoe for the first official meeting of the new term.
“Thank you to all who have put their faith in me over the past two terms and in this election,” Isbester said during her inaugural address.
“Thank you to all those who have stepped forward in this election, a record number. It’s not an easy job campaigning and their interest and concern for the municipality is much appreciated.”
Before laying out her plans for the upcoming term, Isbester took some time to reflect on the last 20 years of amalgamation.
“It would not be right if I didn’t acknowledge all those who have sat in this chair over the last 20 years,” said Isbester. “They have seen many changes and worked hard to maintain the financial wellbeing of this municipality while improving services, constantly looking for new business and industry while working to support those already within our borders.”
Isbester says infrastructure will be at the top of her priorities.
“We have roads in all areas of all types which require immediate attention, but without funding from outside our tax base, we need to find ways to make them last longer,” said Isbester.
Along with going over some of the challenges they will face over the next term, Isbester also touched upon some of the opportunities, such as the construction of the Gibbard District and the new business that could attract.
“My promise to you for this term is straight forward,” said the mayor. “I will give our community every ounce of positive energy. I will work with my fellow councillors, staff, residents, businesses and industries of all types in an open, positive and engaging manner.”
