Incoming Greater Napanee Soccer Club president Billy Camperlino has some lofty goals for the long-term future of the beautiful game in Napanee.

A native of Haiti, who spent some time in the Greater Toronto Area before arriving in Napanee last year, Camperlino has an extensive soccer background. He says he plans to apply that to his new role as he looks to grow the game here.

“We want every soccer player to stay here,” said Camperlino. “I’ve seen a few players who have potential and unfortunately they have to drive away to get to the next level. I want people to stay here and grow here in Napanee.”

In the meantime he’s also hoping to continue to encourage players of all levels to play the game, whether it be just for fun or at a more competitive level.

Online registration for the upcoming outdoor season is now underway at www.soccernapanee.com with in person registrations set for March 21 from 6-8 p.m. in the NDSS cafeteria, April 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SPC.

“We’re always looking for new players,” said Camperlino. “It’s an exciting game, it’s open to anyone, even if you haven’t played before. Kids don’t need to know anything about soccer.”

Age categories will include Under-4, U-6, U-8, U-10, U-12, U-15 and a competitive U-18.

Along with players, parents also have the opportunity to get involved through volunteering as coaches.

“We’re constantly looking for help with coaching,” said Camperlino. “They don’t have to have any background in soccer in order to do so. We’ll have staff to help them.”

The outdoor soccer season is slated to begin May 6 with an opening festival for all teams and run through the end of July.
