Napanee District Secondary School class of 2020 graduates will mark their accomplishment a bit differently this year, doing so through social media from June 22-25.

Dubbed ‘Grad Week 2020’ by the Limestone District School Board, the celebration will conclude with video of Class of 2020 Valedictorian Marshall McFarland, an address from principal Erin Pincivero and recognition of all the graduating students.

Leading up to the main event, students will be able to make an appointment for June 22 through June 24 for a Class of 2020 photo booth that will be set up outside the front doors of NDSS. Students will receive a commemorative Class of 2020 tassel as well as a special gift. Students will be able to purchase their cap and gown set if they choose for $10, paid for in exact change or by debit or tap to keep the event contactless.

For support, grads are permitted to have one adult accompany them to the photo appointment.

The virtual grad ceremony will be released publicly through the LDSB YouTube channel at 6:30 p.m. on June 25.

At this stage of the provincial emergency declaration graduation diplomas are not available to students. The Ministry of Education will not be mailing schools the materials to produce the legal documents until schools re-open, presumably in the fall.  The school will share more information about the plan for diploma distribution to students once it has been provided with this direction from the ministry. Students’ official high school transcript will be mailed home with their final report card in July.

The school has also indicated they are committed to inviting graduating students back to NDSS for an in-person graduation reception when it is safe to do so.
