Students at Napanee District Secondary School are calling on members of the community to help them turn October into ‘Socktober’.

All month long students have been collecting new socks, which they plan to donate to Socks Napanee after Oct. 31.

“It’s a challenge that we started in our school, donating as many socks as possible,” said Makayla Roy, one of the students who spearheaded the fundraiser. “Our goal is 2,000, right now we’re at 755. We know that elementary schools are getting involved as well. We’re hoping that we’ll be able to reach out to the community.”

Roy says she and Rachel Jaynes formed the committee with the help of Mme Devon Hale as the staff supervisor. They had discussed a handful of charities to support before settling on Socks Napanee, which aims to get new pairs of socks for those less fortunate in the area. From there the student-led committee has grown to a handful of students who have dedicated their time to collecting socks and raising awareness throughout the school.

“We’re going to keep them in Napanee, donate them and spread them to different homes,” said Roy of the socks they collect.

Anyone looking to help them with their goal can drop off new socks to the NDSS front office before Oct. 31. A donation box has been set up inside the school’s main office.
