Napanee District secondary School hosted a soccer tournament featuring 69 Special Olympic athletes competing from three different schools on Oct. 11.

The event was a regional qualifier for the Special Olympics provincials. Joining the NDSS Golden Hawks in competing were the Eastside Ravens and Centennial Secondary School, both from Belleville.

In the traditional category (Special Olympic athletes only), Napanee was undefeated with a record of 4-0 in the tournament with 28 goals for and 0 against.  This category included both a team from Centennial S.S. and Eastside S.S.

In the unified category (Special Olympic athletes along with unified mainsteam athletes), there were five teams competing.  This category included two teams from Napanee, two teams from Eastside, and one team from Centennial.  NDSS White had the best record in this division with two wins, one loss and no ties.  The other team, NDSS Gold, had a record of one win, no losses and two ties.
NDSS will find out in the coming weeks if they have qualified for the Special Olympic provincials.

NDSS School to Community teacher Mike Newstead noted Jill Ardern and her Recreation Leadership class helped plan, organize, set up, and support the tournament throughout the day in a variety of roles.  There was also support from the Family Studies department led by Robin Michelle Leroux and Fran VanDerHeydon, where they had prepared a lunch for all athletes and coaches that were participating in the event.
