Napanee District Secondary School students fought the law in a friendly game of hockey at the Best and Bash Arena on Feb. 7-and the law won 5-3.

It wasn’t all bad though for the young athletes, as $1,360 was raised to be split between the Morningstar Mission and Lennox and Addington OSPCA, with RBC kicking in an additional $1,500 for the Mission.

The money was raised by NDSS staff and students who bought out of class on Friday to watch senior members of the NDSS Golden Hawks hockey teams face-off against members of the Kingston Police, Lennox and Addington OPP with special guest Greater Napanee mayor Terry Richardson.

The fans were treated to a competitive game, which was tied 3-3 late into the third before the Police pulled ahead and then added an empty-netter in the final minute. A successful penalty shot and the empty net goal proved to be the difference for the law enforcement squad in blue.

Ella Mulder, Lucas Asselstine and Sophie Fraser each scored for the Golden Hawks.

“I thought it went great,” said NDSS captain Carter Slaven, who also helped organize the charitable event. “Not the outcome the Hawks were looking for but it ended up being a great success.”

Between the second and third period fans had the chance buy a rubber duck to toss on the ice in hopes of being closest to the centre to win a prize. Big D’s canteen also donated $2 from every french fry meal sold to the cause.

Regardless of the score, the main focus was to bring the community together and help bridge the gap between local teens and law enforcement.

“This wouldn’t have been able to come together without the help of Napanee Student Council, the Rec program, RBC, OSPCA, MyFM, Napanee Beaver, Kingston Police, Napanee OPP…It took a lot of people to bring this together and all the money raised is going to go to a great cause whether it’s the Humane Society or Morningstar Mission,” said Shawn Birney, a member of the Kingston Police who helped organize the event. “I know our two rooms had a blast with it. It was a competitive game all the way through. There were smiles right across the bench with us and it was a great day by all. I really appreciate all the support from the community.”

After the success of this year’s event, both sides are hoping to make it an annual game.
