NDSS’ sports clubs reflected on the 2018-19 season Tuesday, honouring the top individual and team efforts during their annual athletic banquet, held inside the high school’s gym.
This year saw two teams reach a KASSAA final, with the mens’ alpine ski team capturing gold while the girls’ hockey team won the KASSAA title. Both were recognized as an Outstanding Team of NDSS.
Outstanding Individual Athletes were swimmer Gracey Vanberkel, who represented the Hawks at OFSAA in the 100 fly and 200 IM, cross-country runner Carter Free who won gold at KASSAA and EOSSAA, and track and field long distance jumper Jessie Brunner, who earned gold and silver at KASSAA and EOSSAA, as well as two golds at East Regionals.

The Lou Somers Trophy, given to a male and female athlete who contribute to NDSS’ athletic program as a whole while maintaining at least a 75 per cent average for the year, went to Emma Chatterton (field hockey, volleyball, badminton, soccer, tennis, ultimate frisbee, athletic council member and convenor of Napanee Youth Volleyball Camp) and Alex Li (volleyball, basketball, badminton, baseball, ultimate frisbee, coach of Napanee Youth Volleyball and member of athletic council).
The D.E. Thompson Award, presented to the Grade 9 female athlete of the year who played on at least two teams, maintained good academic standing while showing leadership, good attitude in games and practice, was shared between Nikki Weese (field hockey, hockey, rugby) and Merissa Reynolds (basketball, volleyball, soccer).
Scott Collard (volleyball, basketball, soccer, badminton, tennis) earned the Andy Egan Trophy as the Grade 9 male athlete of the year.
The Eric Bartlett Award, presented to the male and female athlete who best exemplified an ongoing improvement to the Physical Education program at NDSS, went to Macey Bailey and Matt Ruttan.
The Athletic Council Award was presented to Hannah Uens, Chatterton, Bailey and Li.
Maddi Wheeler (hockey) and Caroline Griffin (field hockey) were given Excellence in Athletics for not only excelling in high school sports, but also provincially or nationally.
The C.S. Froud Trophy, given to the outstanding male and female athletes of the year, went to Chatterton and Andrew Hudgins (volleyball, basketball, baseball).
