The 26th Annual Senior Men’s Bonspiel on Saturday had 16 curling teams battling to get their names on the trophy.

This bonspiel was started by Walter Genereux in 1994 as The Deacon’s Bench Senior Bonspiel. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Genereux and then Ken Healy, the Seniors Men’s Bonspiel has become a very popular fixture on our curling calendar. New convenor Allan Wrigglesworth and his committee of Don Weir and Peter Wilkie ensured this trend continued. The men were wined and dined all day long with the added bonus of curling three six end games. The trophy and second draw winner this year was a local team of Don Currier, Kirk Donald, Al Thompson and Ed Kurc with locals Ian Munro, Brian Hobin, Mark Taylor and Andy Graham winning the first draw but falling short of the trophy by three and three quarter  ends. In second place each draw were the teams of Bill Racz and John Futtit, both from Royal Kingston Curling Club and in third each draw were local teams Jim Stapley and Chris Coleman. Over the last 26 seasons the winners by club are as follows: Royal Kingston 13, Napanee 10, Brockville one, Cataraqui one and Quinte one. Wrigglesworth ended his announcements by thanking all the participants and asking for a round of applause for the kitchen staff, the bar staff and the ice staff.

NDCC’s board has lots still planned so members are encouraged to check the bulletin boards. Hospice, one of the club’s yearly rentals is still looking for a couple of teams for their bonspiel on Jan. 26. On Feb. 2 is the TCO Agromart  Ltd Farmers and Friends Open by Jim Stapley which has a full slate of 16 teams. The sign up sheet is posted for the Annual Ladies Club Bonspiel by Moira Sickling for Sunday, Feb. 10 and Linda Bongard still has a few tickets for Paint Nite set for Feb. 10. There is also a sign up sheet for our annual Highland Lassie on Saturday Feb. 23 by Linda Yorke.

The Novice League starting on Sunday still has room for curlers so call Sandy 613-354-7138 or check out www.ndcc.ca. This is just the opportunity for those who have been waiting for to try the sport of curling.
