Napanee teen Liam Swart was presented a certificate of achievement by Greater Napanee council during their Sept. 10 meeting in recognition of the fact he won the 2019 Ontario and Canadian Junior Trapshooting Championships.

The 16-year-old member of the Napanee Rod and Gun Club captured both the provincial and national title over the summer, first in St. Thomas and then in Hamilton.

“It’s great for any council to be able to recognize one of their residents and certainly it’s even better when it’s someone young and up and coming and is very dedicated,” said Greater Napanee mayor Marg Isbester. “Last year (Liam) went to the provincials purely to experience a big shoot. As it turned out, he came home with nine trophies and he hasn’t looked back. His aim is to continue to improve and become a member of the Canadian Olympic team.”

At the Canadians he was matched up against 250 other shooters, where he had the highest score among the junior members.

He’s excelled quickly in the sport, which he just took up about a year and a half ago when he tagged along with his father to the shooting range.

“It’s really nice to see someone like this succeed at an individual sport and come on so very quickly,” added Isbester.
