Napanee’s VON celebrates its volunteers with drive-thru barbecue

Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) volunteers were invited to a barbecue and some live music on Sept. 25 as a thank you for all that they do. Submitted photo.

On Sept. 25 the Victorian Order of Nurses in Napanee was the site of a drive-thru barbecue, in recognition of their volunteers.
Around 75 volunteers enjoyed a burger meal and never had to get out of their car. Typically volunteers are recognized in April of every year during National Volunteer Week. This year’s celebrations had to be delayed and re-imaged due COVID-19.

Manager Cindy Weese and her team set up tents creating a festive environment with music and decorations. Volunteers were able to drive through, pick up their food and head elsewhere to eat their lunch, however, many chose to park their vehicles, roll down their windows and listen to music provided by Richard Crouse. Others decided to enjoy the warmth and sunshine, relaxing in a lawn chair, physically distancing from others.

VON services have continued throughout the pandemic with staff visiting clients in their homes providing service and support to many seniors in Napanee and surrounding area. Now more than ever, the staff has been a welcoming site for many seniors and their caregivers.
