After over a year in the works, Napanee’s Shylah Hart has released her first single, Atypical.

The original song is a mix of New Country and Pop.

“This was written last March through an online video chat on Facebook with a song writer named Justin Toito from Toronto,” said Hart. “We recorded in June and filmed the music video in September.”

The music video, which was shot on Napanee’s Woodcock Street, will be released May 7, just over a week after the song was made available on all streaming platforms. The NDSS graduate enlisted the help of some Napanee peers to act in the video.

“At first it was very nerve-racking I didn’t know how people were going to take it,” Hart said of releasing the song. “But it’s very exciting and surreal all at the same time. So far everybody’s really liked it and I’m super excited to have finally shared it with them.”

Though this marks her first single, she’s no stranger to the local music scene, making regular appearances at talent shows, including the Napanee Fair and Napanee Country Jamboree. Music runs in the family, as her mom Lisa Hart is a well-known Country singer, songwriter and recording artist.

Inspiration for Atypical came from the summer fling of the characters of Noah and Allie from the popular romance film The Notebook. From there Hart expanded on the story.

An early May release was perfect timing for the song with summer just around the corner.

“It’s about having summer fun,” she added.

To celebrate the launch of Atypical, she held a virtual launch party on Zoom.

Hart will be hosting a virtual concert on May 22 at 7 p.m. on her Facebook and Instagram pages. She also has plans to put out two more original singles over the next couple of months, with more information coming to her social media pages.
