Owen Hewett was the guest of honour at the Kingston Frontenac’s New Year’s Day game, recognizing his annual efforts to collect winter clothing for those in need.
The nine-year-old Napanee native was named the Fronts’ ‘hero of the game’ and was shown on the big screen at the Leon’s Centre as the in-house announcer told the crowd about his warm clothing campaign. Over the last six years Hewett has raised over $10,000 worth of winter jackets, mittens and boots, which he has donated every year to the Morningstar Mission, doing so every December. His 2022 campaign was his best to date, generating $4,192 worth of clothing thanks in part to local donors, which included the Frontenacs who added some of the winter gear from their team shop in this year’s donation.
Hewett’s efforts were met with a thunderous applause from those in attendance at Sunday’s game. As part of his visit to the game Hewett had a chance to meet team mascot Barrack the Bear.
This coming Friday another Napanee native, Cal Uens, will visit the Kingston Frontenacs, though for a much different reason. Uens’ Owen Sound Attack will provide the opposition for the Fronts that night, with puck drop slated for 7 p.m. That game will represent a homecoming of sorts as Uens first learned to game of hockey in Napanee before graduating to the Quinte Red Devils and ultimately selected 42nd overall by the Attack in June of 2021.
Uens, who is 17-years-old, is in currently in the middle of his second season in the Ontario Hockey League, having just recently celebrated his 100th career game. In 32 games so far the defenceman has one goal and seven assists with a plus three rating.
