A simple category switch made all the difference for Napanee bodybuilder Kristen Nourry, who placed first in the Women’s Figure Open B Class at the Canadian Physique Alliance Natural Championships, held in Moncton, NB.

The win was a career first for Nourry, who took up the sport of body building in 2019.

“I started the whole fitness (journey) in 2015 and I dropped a total of 127 pounds,” said Nourry. “Then I just wanted another challenge so I did my first figure show in 2019 in Alberta and then I did a wellness last year at the New Brunswick Naturals but realized that I was built more for figure. So I wanted to come back to New Brunswick for redemption and I walked away with placing first in Class B and I took overall as well in the figure category.”

Making the switch from the wellness category to figure proved to be just what she needed. After finishing seventh in wellness last year, this time around she took the top spot in figure.

“Wellness is more lower body dominant, legs, more glutes and kind of like a softer upper, like bikini,” she explained of the differences between the two. “Figure we are proportionate from literally shoulder to leg. They want to see more built, rounded shoulders and more muscle definition in the back. It’s more of a leaner look.”

Nourry credits the staff at Napanee’s Planet Fitness as well as Joyce’s Meat and Deli for helping her achieve her look through diet and exercise.

Her first place finish qualified her for the national championships in August, however she plans to skip it for this year. Instead she will begin her off-season training program with her sites set on the Cobourg Naturals competition next year, with the intent to compete at nationals in 2024.
