Kadence Hendrick’s kindness towards a friend going through a difficult time has earned her special recognition from the Ontario Community Newspaper Association, who named her a recipient of their Junior Citizen Award.

Hendrick, a Grade 4 student from Napanee, was honoured for being ‘a good kid who does more than is expected of someone of that age’. Her Grade 3 teacher Jennifer Zwiers nominated her.

“She has been walking along side a young friend who was diagnosed with cancer in August,” her teacher wrote on her nomination form. “Kadence has demonstrated understanding, empathy and caring through the shaving of her own head to support her, as well as sharing her story, with permission, to others in order to bring the realities of a cancer diagnosis to light.”

Zwiers indicated Kadence’s mother Tanya as an excellent example for her daughter by showing compassion and inclusion.

“Kadence’s enthusiasm for life and her positive attitude combine to make a great friend to all, especially those that aren’t always included by others,” Zwiers added. “She feels things passionately and cares deeply, beyond her years.”

In recognition of her compassion, the OCNA mailed a certificate to Hendrick, which was presented on their behalf by the Napanee Beaver.
