After a successful debut last year, the Napanee Parkinson support group will host their second annual Superwalk on Sept. 5.

Registration will be held the day of the walk at the Napanee Community Health Centre at 1 p.m. From there participants will take a short, leisurely walk through town.

“We’re raising money and trying to make the community more aware of Parkinson’s,” said Darlene McLeod, event organizer. “We’re hoping we can either meet or better our goal from last year.”

The first ever walk held last September raised $2,500.

Anyone interested in participating can download a pledge form at www.SuperWalk.ca or call the Canadian Parkinson Association at 1-800-565-3000. Pledge sheets will also be available the day of the walk at the NACHC.

Money raised from the event will go towards research for the disease, which is diagnosed in an average of 25 Canadians per day. It’s characterized as a progressive, degenerative brain disorder. Though some symptoms can be treated, there is currently no cure for the disease which only worsens over time.

Superwalks will be held across Canada throughout the month of September. The local event is hosted by the Napanee Parkinson support group, which meets the first Wednesday of every month at the NACHC at 1:30 p.m. They offer support to people living with the disease and their family members. They also host guest speakers.

The health centre is located at 26 Dundas Street W in Napanee.
