Napanee OPP have laid a charge related to horses running loose in the Blessington and Weese roads area of Tyendinaga Township.
OPP officers had responded to numerous calls for service over the past several weeks and months.
The OPP has determined that the horses were able to roam away from their owner’s property due to inadequate fencing. During the course of the investigation, the OPP also received concerns regarding the overall health and welfare of animals on the farm.
On Tuesday officers from the Napanee OPP, assisted by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) and the Township of Tyendinaga, executed a search warrant on the property in relation to animal welfare issues.
A 70-year-old woman has been charged with mischief under the Criminal Code of Canada. The horses will be temporarily removed from the property and housed elsewhere until such time as an appropriate enclosure can be erected to prevent the animals from leaving the property.
“The Napanee OPP is optimistic that a collaborative effort of all the agencies and individuals involved will result in a solution that addresses the safety and welfare of the animals and the public”, said Insp. Scott Semple, the Napanee detachment commander. “However, until all the animals can be rounded-up and transported to safety, there remains a risk that horses could still stray. We remind motorists in the area to continue to exercise caution when driving in the area.”
