Napanee man charged with arson following Saturday night fire on Robert Street

A 43 year-old Napanee man is facing arson charges following a fire at a residential unit on Robert Street in Napanee late Saturday night.

Just after 11:00 p.m., officers attended to an apartment on Robert Street after they encountered a man in the street nearby. When the officers arrived, they discovered that the apartment was on fire and called the Napanee Fire Department.

Thanks to the quick actions of fire department, the fire was extinguished inside the apartment and damage to the rest of the building was minimized.

The joint investigation by both the OPP and the Office of the Fire Marshall has determined that the fire was deliberately set. The occupant of the apartment, the same man that was located in the street nearby, was arrested and charged with arson. He was released from custody with bail conditions and will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Napanee on Jan. 9, 2019.

Damage to the building is thought to be in excess of $10,000 dollars.
