A group of Ontario peace officers will jog through Napanee tomorrow morning as they make their way towards Ottawa as part of the National Peace Officers Memorial Run.

“It’s a 460-kilometre run from the Ontario Provincial Police site in Toronto and it ends at the National Peace Officer Memorial on Parliament Home in Ottawa,” said Joe Tisdale, security manager with the Quinte Detention Centre. “All the runners are peace officers that work in Ontario. They’ll all have an armband on them for an officer that has fallen in the line of duty.”

Members of the Quinte Detention Centre as well as Napanee OPP officers are expected to take part in the run.

The run got underway today and continues through Saturday, with an expected arrival in Napanee of around 11 a.m. tomorrow. This year they’ll take a bit of a detour, travelling along Bridge Street East to Alma Avenue on their way to Hwy. 2, so as to avoid downtown construction. A barbecue will take place at the skate park located at Springside Park.

“The funds we raise from our barbecue go right back into the peace officer memorial fund,” said Tisdale. “That goes right to the families of fallen officers. They use it for different functions, events and charities for them.”
