Coles Notes

The staff of the County of L&A Libraries are avid readers and always eager to share their favourite books. Here we bring you a list of some of the reads we’ve recently enjoyed. This month you’ll find a couple of twisty mysteries, an American prison exposé, and a YA novel based off of the game of Clue.

Julie suggests Follow Me by Kathleen Barber

“Audrey Miller is obsessed with social media but is somewhat näive as to what might happen if the wrong person follows you. When she posts about moving to a new city and her exciting new job her obsessive follower becomes more aggressive in their interactions with her. Kathleen Barber introduces the perfect amount of characters that may or may not be Audrey’s stalker that will keep you guessing to the end. This is a perfect cautionary tale of what happens when you share too much of you life on social media.”

Kristin suggests In the Hall with the Knife by Diana Peterfreund

“Are you a fan of a good murder mystery? Have you ever enjoyed the board game CLUE? Do you have a favourite character or weapon from this famous game? Or might you even remember watching the CLUE movie? If you answered yes to any of the previous questions, then I suggest you read this thrilling new book based on CLUE featuring the same set of memorable and quirky characters. This modern reimagining of a classic whodunnit board game is suitable for both teens and adults looking for a fascinating, page-turning mystery that is sure to keep you guessing right up until the last page.”

Andree suggests The Empty Bed by Nina Sadowsky

“This story unfolds in alternating chapters voiced by several characters providing multiple perspectives on the main story and subplots. The intense pace of the novel delivers a cinematic feel. The main story revolves around Americans Eva and her husband Peter who live in London. Eva drinks a lot and Peter works long hours, which causes marital problems. Peter tries to ‘fix it’ by booking a surprise anniversary trip to Hong Kong. He thinks Eva is paranoid when she claims that a man who followed her in London is on their flight. The couple have a huge fight in the hotel lobby. When Eva disappears Peter thinks she is just acting out. After 24 hours, he starts to panic and reports Eva missing but the police do not take him seriously based on the lobby fight and his subsequent behaviour. The action happens on several fronts making The Empty Bed a fast-paced thriller that keeps you turning pages well into the night.”

Jennifer suggests American Prison by Shane Bauer

“In American Prison, Bauer’s investigation is twofold. First, historical research demonstrates the rise of private prisons in the U.S. coincided with the end of the Civil war; it effectively acts as a proxy for the ongoing enslavement of black men. Second, his undercover assignment as a correctional officer exposes rampant corruption and mistreatment; pervasive lax and unfair practices endanger both inmates and guards. Overall, it is clear that the toxic environment of private prisons gradually and insidiously dehumanizes both offenders and officers. Proof positive: Bauer himself is overtaken by a new cruel streak that negatively impacts his work and home.”

Patricia suggests Noel Street by Richard Paul Evans

Noel Street by Richard Paul Evans immerses the reader in the town of Garland, Utah and the lives of Elle and Emerson. The past and the present intertwine as Elle and Emerson struggle through their history in order to heal their hearts and move forward in love.”
