Man rescued from water just off Unger Island

Greater Napanee Emergency Services responded late Friday afternoon to a report of a boat overturned on the Bay of Quinte just off Unger Island.

Upon arrival crews confirmed the location of the boat and lone occupant who had been in the water for over an hour. GNES deployed a rescue swimmer and line tender to execute the water rescue.  The man, who was wearing a personal floatation device, was treated for cold water exposure by EMS and fire crews. Firefighters from the Mohawk Fire Department also responded with a boat as part of an automatic aid agreement with Greater Napanee.

The fire department would like to take this opportunity to remind all boaters or those working around the water to have and wear an approved personal floatation deice. During this time of year, the water temperature is still cold and will overcome someone quickly if submersed and the onset of hypothermia is great.
